Experimental investigation of a highly efficient, low-cost PVC-Rollers Sandwich (PVC-RS) seismic isolation

This paper focuses on the large-scale experimental investigation of a novel, highly efficient, low-cost and easily constructible seismic isolation system, defined as PVC-Rollers Sandwich (PVC-RS) isolation. The proposed system is based placement spherical roller bearings between two PVC surfaces in sandwich configuration. configuration triggers desirable rolling behaviour rollers surfaces, thus isolating motion structure from ground excitation. shaking table response scaled-down masonry steel model seismically isolated prototype using PVC-RS has unveiled activation at desirably low acceleration amplitude 0.05g-0.1g. reliability this low-acceleration was confirmed for excitations different amplitudes frequency characteristics. experimentally tested variation amount, material diameter allows implementation design alternatives presented according to requirements performance objectives each location.
